The picture of the vulture and the little girl is a stunning and controversial picture on the vast internet and in real life. As a photojournalist, Kevin Carter was on his way to Sudan in completing an assignment, when a vulture made his way to this struggling little girl. And in hopes, of capturing this moment he starts waiting for several minutes to allow the bird to come closer. In the end, he was able to gain the symbolic photo called "Struggling Girl", but behind it was a heavy cost. This disturbing photo began to collect lots of backlash in a few days and as a result, the photographer claims his own life.
So after reading the photographer's story, I have come to a firm stand that Kevin's actions that day were entirely wrong. His actions also go to show that he values "capturing the moment" over saving an unhealthy child's life. It's similar to what today's generation does when a fight or other dangerous activity that involves harming someone takes place. They grab their phones and hit the record button without solving or interfering in the situation. Just so that they can produce an authentic video to publish on various social media platforms to ridicule or embarrass victims. Above all, this is not the way humans are to behave, especially for a piece of picture or video. Instead, we are called to love, help, and protect one another to maintain our values throughout all generations. And for photojournalists, I firmly think they should not stress over capturing an image without influencing, interfering, or altering it. Since photography is an art that is malleable and each individual may have their way to express that form of art. Alternatively, we should also think about each image we capture to see if anything is wrong or may offend some people. For this is the way to avoiding controversies and making sure our work is ethical and beneficial to mankind. To conclude, I believe the story of Kevin Carter is horrible yet an eye-opening story for people and photographers alike. It makes photojournalists and people reconsider or re-evaluate their pictures, so that they can please people ethically. Especially with people on the internet who have the power to praise or ridicule someone to death for their actions. So as we live through life, it's important that we make the right decision and always evaluate ourselves to live the best life possible.
